Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear and welcome to another instalment of Barbour icons, this is the series where we take a deep dive into some of Barbours most iconic and classic jackets. Today we're going to take a closer look at the Barbour Beacon. It's an icon in its own right, and I can't wait to tell you all about the features, a bit of the history and the fit of this wonderful jacket.
The History of the Barbour Beacon Sports Jacket
So let's begin with the origins of this jacket, so Barbour did a collaboration with a Japanese designer Tokito and what they created was a sports jacket, a blazer sort of style made out of wax cotton, and had all the features that you'd come to expect from a Barbour jacket. Leather trims had a detachable hood and an inner storm flap, it was packed to the rafters with features that made it a unique jacket.
And because it was such an iconic style the customers at the 2012 Skyfall James Bond film spotted it, and they knew it had to be part of their story, so there is a very iconic scene where Bond rocks up to Skyfall wearing that Barbour jacket and from there the legend was cemented.
Everyone wanted a piece of that jacket, and it's no wonder that Barbour created the Beacon not long after that to kind of feed the desire that was after for a jacket like this.
Barbour Beacon Sports Jacket Features
So if you get the Beacon jacket, what are you going to get, what are the features, and what are the materials?
So, what you're looking at on this is a 6 oz wax cotton and of course that iconic olive green. On top of that, you've got 8 oz patches to the elbows to add a little bit more ruggedness. You've also got a 3 pocket style, so two to the bottom there, and one to the chest. Leather trims on everything, on the pockets, the cuffs and of course around the collar as well. And to give it that true, utility, hunter style there is a poachers pocket to the back which has got zips on either the left or the right side too. The jacket can be worn in multiple ways, it doesn't have to be worn as I'm wearing it here.
It has the functionality to button up to the top and even close up thanks to the button throat latch which you can see just to the side here, and we'll show you how that looks.
The Fit of the Beacon
So how does the Beacon fit? It is tailored to fit on Barbours own website they say to size up one to get that perfect fit. I'd tend to agree, I'm wearing a medium now as I've mentioned in my previous videos I'm usually a medium, I'm a 38-inch chest, I'm 5, 10", 75-80 kilos depending on what day of the week it is, and the medium does fit, it is a nice tailored fit, it is snug, but I wouldn't be doing much in terms of layering underneath this. It is just wax cotton with a tartan lining so it's not exactly thick and bulky.
When it comes to winter, if you're wanting to layer up, a nice jumper under here maybe a scarf, you're going to be looking at sizing up there just to give yourself that little bit of extra room.
How to Style the Beacon
And then how to wear it? Again, two ways...you can button it up to the top, and wear it as a proper utility jacket. or wear it with a shirt that may be unbuttoned. It can be dressed up and down quite easily.
