Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear and welcome back to another episode of Barbour Icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's iconic and timeless styles and today we're looking at the Ogston. Now this is a jacket that's been part of our collection for as long as I can remember and it is sought after. We get plenty in each year and each year they fly out. So, let me tell you a little more about this fantastic style and why it needs to be in your winter jacket rotation.
The Barbour Ogston Features
So, the Ogston is a smart and stylish classic piece of outerwear that does take inspiration from Barbour's country styling, but I think it can be worn in almost any circumstance. Now it's super robust and heavy-duty, made from an 8oz waxed Oban cotton.
It is heavy-duty, and it can put up with most wind rain and weather, just like any waxed cotton. But it does have a few little additional extras which I think do just set it apart. Unlike most Barbour jackets it has a built-in liner, so this is just sort of a bib front, it's not detachable, but it does add a little extra layer of protection between you and the outdoors. Of course, you're going to come to find corduroy everywhere, there's a little bit on the inside of the collar, there's a little bit on the inside of the cuff, it just adds to those little extra details.
Like most Barbour jackets, brass accoutrements are aplenty. You've got brass buttons, zips, two-way zips, press studs, you name it, it's all in brass, and it looks tasteful. A nice little addition to the Ogston is the use of leather on the elbow patches, which adds to that rugged countrywear aesthetic but makes it timeless and classy as well. This is a jacket you could do with dressing up.
How Practical is the Ogston?
So, that's the general practicalities on the outside but what about usability? Well, you've got four pockets to the front so it evokes that classic field-jacket design. The bottom two pockets also have a side entry which is great for keeping your hands warm, it is a useful feature to have.
Now I know I've mentioned the inner bib but on the actual inside it has Barbour's classic tartan colour lining and this is made out of a nice 70% wool-rich blend, so super warm, very wintery, and does have a touch of padding to it this jacket just with it being multi-layered, so it's going to keep you warm and toasty when things do take a turn for the worst.
How Does the Ogston Fit?
So, the Ogston… fit-wise it's regular fitting. It's a pretty rugged jacket and it fits just like that as well. I'm a medium wearing a medium so definitely true to size, obviously I'm just wearing a t-shirt underneath, but I would be more than comfortable wearing a nice piece of knitwear, see my friend here underneath this, you know if you want to layer it up when things do take a bit of a turn for the worst. So, nice easy-going, take your usual size and you should be happy away with this jacket.
So in a nutshell that is the Ogston, it is a rugged winter jacket but I think it really does have some great practicality and definitely can be worn in the transitional seasons as well. There's not much to dislike about this really, it evokes classic Barbour where it's got a few design twists and elements that elevate it, making it quite stylish and quite refined as well at the same time.
How to Style the Barbour Ogston
With this jacket it is effortless to pair it with some of the more seasonal pieces, such as the matching wool holdall, that's in the same kind of blend that you'll find on the inside lining of this jacket and as well as I mentioned, you can wear it with a nice piece of Barbour knitwear and even a matching tartan brolly to go along with it as well. So, no matter the weather, this Barbour Ogston will have you covered.
