Hi guys, it’s Sam here from Michael Stewart menswear and welcome to another instalment of Barbour Icons, the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour’s most iconic and timeless pieces of outerwear and clothing.
Today we’re going to take a closer look at the Lowerdale gilet, this is a core staple in Barbour’s range. it’s inspired by their equestrian heritage, and I can’t wait to tell you all about the features, the fit and some of the finer details.
Barbour Lowerdale Gilet Features
So these gilets are constructed in Barbour’s iconic and signature two-inch box quilt. It’s 100% polyamide and it is polyester filled as well so it has an incredible amount of warmth to it.
You’re going to find a few features on here such as two patch pockets to the front which give great storage, you’ve also got a concealed zip pocket to the inside as well. To fasten it up you’ve got a two-way zip and a press stud storm flap to add a little bit of extra protection against those elements.
To the inside of the collar, it’s beautifully lined with suede, so it’s really, really soft and warm against your neck and it really is a great ‘go to’ no matter the weather.
How to Wear the Barbour Lowerdale Gilet
So the Lowerdale is really easy to wear your way, you’ve got a choice of three core colours, black as I’m wearing, navy as on the mannequin here and they also come in this sage colour which also has the nice contrasting brass buttons. Seasonally, different seasons, they do bring out some unique colours as well so do keep an eye out for those. In terms of the branding on these pieces, they’re super, super subtle.
You’ve got a branded patch to the back of the neck and then just the gold inner crest to the inside of the pocket as you can see there. So, super simple, super minimal and really easy to wear no matter the weather no matter the occasion.
When it gets a little bit warmer, you can wear it over a t-shirt just as I’m doing, or you can certainly wear it over a heavier knit in autumn and there’s nothing stopping you from using this as a jacket liner and wearing this underneath your favourite Barbour Jacket in the depths of winter. Again, super adaptable and a really great piece to have in your wardrobe.
The Fit of the Barbour Lowerdale
So, let’s talk about the fit of the Lowerdale gilet. On Barbour’s website, they’re going to say it’s a tailored fit, and we’d certainly agree with that and then some. They are incredibly slim fitting, and our general recommendation is to size up one if you are looking to wear it with layers or anything thicker than a t-shirt.
I’m usually a medium across the board, I’m a 38 chest, I’m 5' 10", 75 - 80 kilos depending on the day of the week and typically I wear a medium in most of my clothing, but in the gilets I’m wearing here this is a large. With the medium, it’s just too tight to fasten up. I can do it, but it’s uncomfortable, and it definitely does start to pull.
In our experience with selling these to hundreds of customers over the years, a lot of them get exchanged, and everyone is usually happier just by sizing up one. That’s our recommendation, of course, it’s not going to be the same for everybody. We do recommend trying to try one on or possibly giving it a go, you know we can always exchange as well so there are plenty of options there, but they are slim fit, that’s just our little word of warning on these. But when you do get the right fit they look amazing, and the tailored fit does work for absolutely everybody.
