Barbour Sapper Jacket Review: Everything You Need to Know
The Barbour Sapper jacket is a popular choice for those looking for a stylish and functional waxed jacket. It is made from Barbour's signature 6oz waxed cotton, which is water-resistant and durable. The jacket also features a number of practical features, such as a stowaway hood, quilted interior lining, and practical zip and flap pockets.
In this review, we will take a closer look at the Barbour Sapper jacket and assess its performance in terms of style, functionality, and comfort. We will also compare it to other similar jackets on the market and discuss whether it is worth the investment.
Video Transcript:
Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear, and welcome back to another episode of Barbour Icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's most iconic and classic jackets. This week we're taking a little look at the Barbour Sapper; it's a four-pocket field jacket design; it's rugged, very country, and I can't wait to tell you all about the fit, the features and a little more information about this jacket. Let's get straight into it.
Features of the Barbour Sapper Jacket
So, as with most Barbour jackets, you're going to find that this is made from a 6oz wax cotton, and as always with wax cotton, you're going to get superior weather protection, wind-proof, water-proof to a degree and of course it's going to last you a lifetime with the right care. Wax cotton gets better with age, so it is an investment piece that will last you forever, given the right care and attention. We love wax cotton obviously, and we have done a video on that recently, so do check that out.
What Can You Expect From Your Barbour Sapper Jacket?
Style-wise, you're going to find that this is a field jacket design, so you have four pockets to the front. These have a press-stud closure, and they also have a slightly more concealed zip pocket to the left breast as well.
It's a very country style, so it has a lot of utility in mind, including the high neck, which is corduroy-lined for a bit of extra warmth. Of course, you're going to find Barbour's two-way brass zip, which is heavy-duty, feels great to use, and you know it's not going to fail you. A press-stud storm flap on the front as well to keep out those elements, as well as adjustable cuffs, inner corduroy lining to the cuffs and the entire jacket is also quilted. It's got a diamond quilt padding with a little bit of stuffing in there, again to add that bit of extra warmth.
It is great for winter, and to enhance the fit of this jacket, it also has a concealed draw cord to the waist, so you can actually cinch that in on both sides, get a slightly more tailored fitted look, and it'll hug a little bit closer to you, again just enhancing that warmth.
Barbour Branding
In terms of styling this jacket and some design features, you will find that it's very minimally branded. It has just a simple embroidery on the lower left pocket. The colour you get from us at Michael Stewart Menswear, you can shop this jacket in black as I'm wearing or of course the classic Barbour olive green.
All the zips are always going to be that brass colour branded with Barbour as well. Still, the actual press studs and the more outer hardware that you can see are all tonal, so black on black or olive on olive, which gives it a clean, slick look and to be honest because of that it does adapt quite well to dressing up and dressing down.
How to Style the Sapper Jacket
This isn't going to look out of place in the country walking the dogs, and likewise, something like the black one can look smart over a suit if you're nipping to the city, and need extra weather protection. It can do it all, it is an adaptable style, really accessible, and that's why it's a core jacket of the collection.
What is the Sizing Like on the Barbour Sapper Jacket?
Size-wise, on this jacket, Barbour says it's slightly tailored, and to be honest, I would contest that. I think this is a pretty regular fitting jacket and my advice would be to take your usual size.
If you remember, I am 5 ft 10, 38 chests, 75-80 kilos, and I usually wear a medium in most of my jackets, and right here I'm wearing the medium. Yes, it is a little bit padded, but there is still room under here to layer.
Currently, I'm just wearing a jumper and t-shirt, so this over-the-top is fine, fits nicely and remember you, have that drawcord waist to cinch it in a little bit if you prefer a slightly more tailored fit. As well, adjustable cuffs kind of cinch it around the wrist. So, it can be worn to your specifications, and you can make it fit how you like. But take your usual size, and you should be spot on with this jacket.
So there we have it, a whistle-stop tour of the Barbour Sapper. Again, it's a classic jacket for us, it's been in our collection for a long, long while and it sort of joins another lineup of these 4 pocket field jacket designs.
How Does the Sapper Compare to Other Barbour Jackets?
Remember you've also got the Corbridge that has the 4 pockets and the Duke. The difference is that the Duke is part of the International range, very motorcycle inspired, the Corbridge is a slimmer version of this I'd sort of say, a little bit smarter, not as a country, a little bit more tailored, but this is a great workhorse of a jacket, regular fitting, easy to wear, easy to throw on and again definitely has its place in the collection and probably has a place in your wardrobe.
