Hi guys, it's Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear and this week we're taking a trip down memory lane and taking a closer look at Sergio Tacchini. It's an iconic sportswear brand, we're going to give you all the information about it and some of its most iconic and timeless pieces of clothing. We're going to tell you about the fit, the features and everything you need to know when shopping for this beautiful brand. So, join me on the trip, let's get straight into it.
Who is Sergio Tacchini?
So before we get in-depth on some of these beautiful pieces of clothing, let's just talk about the history of the brand. So very, very similar to Fred Perry, Sergio Tacchini is a man, he is a real person, he was a tennis player from Italy and in 1966 he turned his eye towards creating sportswear. Named it after himself and from then the rest was history. He's clothed the likes of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors as well as thousands of other great and influential tennis players.
OK, thousands is probably a bit of an exaggeration but it certainly feels that way when you see this iconic badge on the court. It's become cemented in pop culture as well as youth cultures, it's been prominent in the 80s and 90's especially in Britain and with American rappers in more recent years as well. So there's a little bit about the brand. Let's start with some of the clothing.
Sergio Tacchini: The Dallas Collection
So I'm going, to begin with the Dallas track top, this style came to prominence in the 1980s, John McEnroe wore it at many tennis competitions and it kind of became a bit of an icon, a legend. It was also famously worn by Danny Dyer in the film The Business which is a classic, if you've never seen that before I would recommend it.
So let's take a little look at this track top to start with. So it's always usually blocked colours, you're always going to get a nice contrast funnel neck, two side pockets, nice ribbed trims on the cuff and hem and as well a branded zip pull and the most iconic piece and the bit to identify the Dallas with is the appliqued double stripe across the chest which goes across the front and back. It comes in many colours, this is just a seasonal one for spring/summer 23.

But it comes back year after year in many, many iconic colours, most noticeably navy body, red collar, and white stripes so certainly one to look out for. It's also made with a nice polycotton blend so super durable, soft and comfortable as well.
How to Style the Dallas Track Top
So the Dallas track top always looks good with a pair of shorts, some track pants, even jeans, corduroy you know it's very, very easy to wear especially when you put on a nice pair of trainers with them as well. But what always looks good underneath that is a T-shirt or polo especially if it's part of the same family let's say.
Let's start with the Supermac polo. This has the same double applique stripes, it was also worn by McEnroe in many variations and colourways. It's got a nice contrast collar and it's made of 100% pique cotton. You then have the t-shirt version as well. Again 100% cotton, super soft, with nice ribbed trims to the collar and cuff and as well the double applique striped. So these three are part of the same sort of family. They wear really well together, it does look nice to have a t-shirt like this or a polo shirt under the Dallas track top.
Sergio Tacchini's Orion Collection
The next iconic style on our list is the Orion track top. This guy is a beauty, he's got raglan sleeves, and he has a 60/40 polycotton blend. Got the same kind of features on most of them so ribbed collar on the funnel neck and ribbed cuffs but the sort of big distinguisher here is the nice contrast piping, quite a more minimal design and of course the applique double stripe to the sleeve this time.
Other variations of this have a block colour on the raglan sleeve, some are fully tonal and just the stripes and piping are different. Or as you have here a half-and-half design but all look fantastic and wear nice. Again a nice casual and easy style to integrate into your wardrobe.

What to Style with the Orion Track Top?
So if you're looking for a style to go along with your Orion track top, I couldn't recommend the Grello tee more. This is 100% cotton, it's nice super easy to style and the nice sort of matching factor are these double applique stripes to the sleeve. These come in many colours but again super easy, and super versatile and because they're 100% cotton they're soft and fit nicely. They've also got a nice ribbed trim to the collar so it sits good around the neck again just a really easy versatile style and wears well with the Orion track top there.
Sergio Tacchini's Damarindo Collection
Next, let's take a look at a long-time classic and that is the Damarindo track top. So this is 100% poly, it's got ribbed trims to the cuff, the collar and the hem, two side pockets and of course the embroidered logo to the chest. But the identifier on this one is the different weighted stripes that run across the chest so there's always going to be a large stripe to the top and a smaller one just below. It's panelled so it's stitched together and it looks amazing, super crisp, super clean.
The example I've got here has a tri-colour design, Others come completely tonal, others just have stripes in different colours and the main body is all uniform. It comes in many variations but again the thing you're looking out for on these is the different weighted stripes that go across the chest. It's a classic, it's been in their collection for ages and they love to reinvent it with exciting new colourways season after season.

What to Style with the Damarindo Track Top?
And then if you're looking to layer the Damarindo with anything I'd recommend the Young Line polo and Master tee. Again they are part of that same sort of family of design. They've got the different weighted stripes across the chest so this is the Young Line polo,100% cotton, embroidered badge, nice ribbed trims and a really clean finish. It's not panelled the actual different colour is just woven within the fabric.
Super clean, super easy to wear and looks great alongside the track jacket. Or if you're more of a t-shirt guy you can go for the Master tee. So it's got the same striping, 100% cotton, ribbed trims and embroidered logo. Again these t-shirts fit really nicely, sit well and can wear with pretty much any casual outfit.
The Tomme Track Jacket
So lastly in terms of iconic styles, we're going to take a quick look at the one that I'm wearing. So I'm wearing the Tomme track jacket, which was taken from a retro design originally worn by the tennis player Jimmy Connors. And what they've got here basically is a block colour panel track jacket, it's the same 60/40 polycotton with all the ribbed trims, 2 pockets and embroidered badge. But a nice point of difference on this one is the flat collar which just gives it a little bit of a different look to your usual funnel necks.

Certainly is worth considering and underneath this track jacket I've got the Rainer tee, so it's a 100% cotton, embroidered badge but what I like about this one is the twin-tipped design just across the neck there, just as a nice point of difference. These are very retro, very classic and again fit nicely within this collection as a whole and together.
How Does Sergio Tacchini Fit?
A quick word on the fit of Sergio Tacchini, I find it pretty true to size, and pretty easygoing. I'm a medium, 5 foot 10, 38-inch chest and I wear a medium in this. This track top is medium, and the t-shirt underneath is medium. Very easy to wear, very easy to style so I'd always recommend going true to size. If you do fancy a bit more of a relaxed fit by all means size up, it will become a little bit baggier maybe a little less tailored, which is nothing wrong with that, that is a great look and is worn by many in just that way.
Before You Run Off the Court
So there we have it, that is our whistle-stop tour down memory lane. In truth, we could probably go into more detail about these styles, their history, the people who wear them, and the times they've cropped up in some fantastic films and pop culture references. The list just goes on with these and if you have any interesting facts or can teach me anything about it, I'd love to learn more. Do let us know and get in touch.
As far as the clothing goes though, if it's something you're interested in you can shop all these styles at michaelstewart.co.uk. If you have any questions about these pieces then simply just get in touch, we would love to hear from you and we can answer the questions as best as we can.
They truly they are very easy to wear, any gent could get into these, they're great in summer and to be fair the winter collection is fantastic as well. They're just timeless, retro is definitely in and I cannot recommend them enough. Until next time, that's all from me and we'll see you on the next one.
