Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear and welcome to another instalment of Barbour icons, this is the series where we take a deep dive into some of Barbour's most iconic and timeless jackets. Today we're going to go down the quilted route, we've done a lot of waxed cotton but I thought I'd show you a little bit about the Heritage Liddesdale. This is a jacket that's been in our roster for many years now, we love it and let me tell you a little bit about the fit, the features and just all the good stuff you need to know about this fantastic jacket.
What are the Different Variations of the Barbour Liddesdale Quilted Jacket?
So there are many different variations of the Liddesdale, it comes in gilet form, I've seen it in womenswear in childrenswear and there are a few different versions in menswear as well. You have the classic Liddesdale which is a little bit longer, it's quite 'boxy'. You've also got the modern Liddesdale which has more of a Lutz or a Beacon feel, it's got a higher collar, slightly more 'blazer-esque'. And then you have this which is the Heritage Liddesdale. It's the one that we've stocked the longest, it's the one that we love the most and that's basically because it's got a nice fit, it's a little bit shorter, it's nice and lightweight which makes it super versatile, adaptable and it's a jacket you can wear all year through.
What is the Barbour Heritage Liddesdale Made of?
It is super, super lightweight there's not much padding to it at all. The exterior is 100% polyamide. The interior is the same, it has a nice little bit of cotton trim to the cuff and around the bottom of the hem, as well of course the iconic Barbour corduroy collar. It's press stud fastened so really simple to put up and it is ideally just a layering piece, you can wear this under thicker jackets, wear it over a sweatshirt or a bit of knitwear or wear it as I'm doing when things are maybe a little bit warmer, just over a t-shirt, it really does seem to do the most and that is probably one of the reasons why we love this jacket out of all of the variations of the Liddesdale.
How Does the Barbour Heritage Liddesdale Fit?
So how does the Heritage Liddesdale fit? Generally, it is a slim fit, it's got a nice tailoring towards the body but then again it's not too tight that you can't take your usual size. I'm a medium wearing a medium here, it's got a little bit of room underneath to probably get under a bit of knitwear but then again it is also thin enough to be able to wear layers on top. The only thing that I will note is that the sleeves do come up a little bit long, especially when I do drop my arms they come down to about mid-palm. Not ideal for how I like to wear them but then again it has got a quite simple construction so nothing is stopping them from being taken up.
Then again if you were wearing something longer-sleeved, a little bit bulkier and padded underneath, that would probably keep the sleeve from dropping too much but that's just a personal preference. It's not a complaint we've got a lot with other customers, they seem to find that this jacket fits absolutely spot on when they take their usual size.
What are the Key Features of the Barbour Heritage Liddesdale?
So, let's talk about the finer details of this fantastic jacket. Construction-wise, it's super simple, there's not much to it at all which is great because it means there's not much that can go wrong with it. To the front you've got two pouch pockets, no closure on these, just simple, you can keep your hands warm, get your belongings easily, no faff no fuss. There is a bit more of a secure pocket on the inside which has a zip closure which is always nice and handy. For the Barbour features of course it has them but they are quite subtle, so all the branded tonal hardware is on there but again it's super discreet, super simple. The collar itself is also tonal so it's a nice paired down style. The only bit of contrast is the embroidered badge which is just on the pocket in a nice contrast gold, which just looks fantastic.
Things to Take Away
There we have it, that is everything you need to know about Heritage Liddesdale. It's one of our favourite jackets, it's been part of our collection for so many years for a reason, it's the only Liddesdale that we do stock and we think it's probably the only one that you need in your wardrobe. Just as a little bit of an alternative, if you're after a sort of similar lightweight quilt but maybe you don't want the sleeves there's always the Lowerdale, that's worth looking at. I have a couple of examples here in black and navy. This is a great style, we have done a video on this previously so do check that out. These are a great alternative if you prefer layering but without the sleeves.
